WHAT IS THE MELT METHOD®

The MELT Method® (MELT) is a simple self-care treatment designed to help you stay healthy, pain-free and active for a lifetime. Created by Sue Hitzmann, a NYC manual therapist and connective tissue specialist, MELT employs the use of a custom soft body roller, set of small rubber balls and a resistance band for the goals of fascial tissue remodeling, pain relief, and performance improvement. These specialized tools are utilized in a way that is non-traumatizing, with light-touch techniques to help regulate your nervous system, improve heart rate variability (HRV), and fine-tune motor control. 

MELT is a neurofascial system, designed to reconnect whole-body communication, rebalance the nervous system, rehydrate the connective tissue, and release compression in joints so that you can be more pro-active about managing your stress, staying out of pain, while improving stability and core-activation.

WHY TRY MELT®?

If you have a body, you have stuck stress living in your connective tissues. Our culture of sitting (at desks, in cars, on the couch) creates dehydration and compression to our low back and neck, not to mention poor posture which throws the rest of our internal systems out of whack. Even just 10 minutes of MELT three times a week will help reduce the effects of accumulated tension and stress caused by daily living. Simple and easy, when done consistently (not unlike daily teeth brushing keeps your teeth healthy), it keeps your body’s systems running more smoothly. This full-body method of self-care is accessible to anyone, anywhere, and can be customized to your particular needs – from improving performance and decreasing the risk of repetitive stress injuries to eliminating chronic pain, regardless of what’s causing your pain in the first place.

melt class DESCRIPTIONS

LIVESTREAM CLASSES

MELT Express (select Mondays): Undo stuck stress in your body while improving stability and increasing mind-body connection in this 30-min MELT class using the Soft Roller. Get in, Get out, Feel Vibrant. Most of the class is performed lying on the roller on the floor. You will need a MELT Soft Foam Roller , MELT Hand and Foot Therapy Balls, and be familiar with basic MELT techniques. Livestream and recorded.

MELT FULL BODY (Sundays): 60-minute full-body workout to improve stability, mobility, core activation, mind-body connection using the MELT Soft Foam Roller, Hand and Foot Therapy Balls and Resistance Band. Pro-actively manage your pain and bring your nervous system into balance. Most of the class is performed lying on the roller on the floor. You will need a MELT Soft Roller, MELT Hand and Foot Therapy Balls, 6 ft Resistance Band and be familiar with basic MELT techniques.

IN PERSON CLASSES

MELT In Person classes at UCSF Fitness centers are for UCSF Fitness and Recreation Members and are geared for all levels of experience and accommodate a range of mobility. Participants must be able to get up and down off of the floor on their own. MELT props are available for use.

Many sessions are followed by a 10-15 minute live Sound Bath by emiko, a calming meditative experience in which the vibrations of crystal bowls, chimes and other instruments promote further physical relaxation as well as stress and anxiety reduction, improved sleep quality, and enhanced mood and well-being.

CARING FOR YOUR MELT PROPS

MELT balls (rubber-based) - sanitize using mild liquid dish washing soap, such as Meyers or Bronner’s. Wash in hot, soapy water. Or wipe with rubbing alcohol and clean cloth. Air dry when using a spray or mist disinfectant.

MELT rollers (rubber based) - sanitize with disinfectant wipes or non-toxic yoga mat sprays. Air-dry when using a spray disinfectant.

Resistance bands - as most cleaning solutions can deteriorate the material, use rubbing alcohol in a mist spray bottle, then allow them to air dry over a bar. Bands can be washed in soapy water, but this can make them sticky. Cornstarch can be used to make them less sticky.
